The short answer

What does lawn care on Cape Cod include?

Lawn care covers regular mowing through the growing season plus the work that builds a healthier lawn: core aeration, overseeding and fertilization. Cape lawns grow in thin, sandy soil that dries out fast, so timing and mowing height matter more here than in heavier soils. We put together a plan and quote based on your lawn and how you use the property.
  • Mowing, trimming and edging through the season
  • Core aeration and overseeding, best in early fall
  • Fertilization timed to the season and town rules
  • Plans for year round and seasonal homes, free quote

Lawn Care

Lawn care services

01

Mowing, trimming and edging

Regular cuts at a height that suits Cape grass, with trimming around beds and edges along walks and driveways.

02

Core aeration

Pulling small plugs of soil opens up compacted lawn so water, air and seed reach the roots. Early fall is the best time on the Cape.

03

Overseeding

New seed into thin or patchy turf, ideally right after aeration, so the lawn fills in before winter.

04

Fertilization

Feeding timed to the growing season and to Massachusetts and town rules on when fertilizer can go down.

05

Seasonal home plans

For owners who are not on the Cape all year, a schedule that keeps the lawn looking cared for whether you are here or not.

06

Cleanups in between

Spring and fall cleanups pair naturally with lawn care, so leaves and debris do not undo the work.

Timing

The Cape Cod lawn calendar

Cape lawns are cool season grasses. They grow hardest in spring and fall and slow down in the heat of July and August, which is when mowing a little higher helps them hold moisture in sandy soil.

Late August through September is the best window for aeration and overseeding. The soil is still warm, nights are cooler and the new grass has time to root before frost.

Fertilizer timing is regulated. Massachusetts does not allow lawn fertilizer to be applied in the winter months, and several Cape towns have stricter local rules. Any feeding plan we put together follows the calendar for your town.

Local know-how

What makes Cape Cod lawns tricky

Sandy soil

Water and nutrients drain through quickly, so the lawn dries out faster and needs a plan that keeps roots deep.

Shade from pine and oak

Heavy canopy thins grass. The right seed and some selective pruning can make a big difference.

Salt and wind near the water

Coastal lawns take salt spray and wind. Grass choice and recovery work matter more by the shore.

Water quality rules

Cape ponds and bays are sensitive to runoff, which is why many towns limit when and how fertilizer goes down.
